Ballet & Books

Ballet and Books is a national, non-profit organization striving to reduce the literacy gap through the hybrid storytelling of dance and reading.

In our extracurricular programming led by high school and college students, we provide 3-9-year-olds with an opportunity to improve their literacy skills through a combination of dance instruction and dialogic reading.

Programming

Our programming occurs on Saturday mornings at the Morningside Heights New York Public Library for 8 weeks each semester.

First, our dance teaching team leads a 45 minute lesson. Then, each student reads and completes literacy exercises with an individually-assigned mentor.

At the end of each semester, our students perform a short piece they have been working on for the preceding month.

New dance teachers and mentors are invited to apply at the beginning of each semester to begin teaching/reading for that semester. (They must complete a new mentor training at the beginning of the semester). However, anyone interested should email morningside.nyc@balletandbooks.org to be added to our mailing list!
